Recording information: 1969 - 1978.
Newcomers to the music of Bob Marley who are looking for a one-stop introduction may find themselves overwhelmed at the plethora of collections on the market. The outstanding two-disc set THE ESSENTIAL BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS, however, can be distinguished from many other compilations in that it focuses almost solely on the work Marley recorded with the Wailers between 1969 and 1974. (The exceptions here are "Natural Mystic" from `76, and "Who Colt the Game" and "I Know a Place" from `78.)
The early Wailers boast a raw, organic sound whose edges would be smoothed over in Marley`s later releases. The fundamental building blocks of ska, R&B, and rocksteady are still prominent, and the burbling rhythms of the Barrett brothers and the matchless playing and harmonizing of Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer are in exquisite form. At the center, of course, is Marley, who premiered some of his most famous songs during this time, including "Lively Up Yourself," "Don`t Rock the Boat," and "Concrete Jungle." Casual fans looking for "No Woman No Cry" and "Redemption Song" shouldn`t be put off by the unfamiliarity of the track list--these early, rootsy recordings are among the best in Marley`s discography.Track Listing: •DISC 1:
