- Bologna construction is a well-known Italian shoe-making technique where the leather forming the upper extends all the way around the shoe and is sewn into a tube. The upper part of the leather is lined, and the lower part of the leather, where the foot will rest, is lined with a soft leather insole. The upper lining is stitched to the soft leather insole on the underside to form a channel on the inside. This type of construction allows for the sole to be cut extremely close for a sleek profile and a lighter weight shoe.
